One of the most, if not the most iconic helmet in all of football belongs to the Nittany Lions of Penn State. For the first time in the school’s history the Nittany Lions did something different with their helmets. The change wasn’t for flash or a recruiting ploy it was to honor an amazing senior that helped lead the Nittany Lions through tough times following the Sandusky scandal. The senior in whom they honored was linebacker Michael Mauti who injured himself and was forced to miss his Senior Day game. The team wore the number 42 on the left side of their helmets to show just how much Mauti meant to the team, school, and community.
