North Carolina Football Unveils 1980 ACC Championship-Inspired Alternate Uniforms
North Carolina football is going back in time.
Ahead of its home opener and as Kenan Stadium celebrates its 100th season, the Tar Heels have unveiled a new alternate uniform inspired by the program’s 1980 ACC Championship team.
The throwback look pulls directly from one of the most memorable eras in Carolina football history, bringing back design elements worn by Tar Heel legends including Lawrence Taylor, Amos Lawrence and Donnell Thompson.
The centerpiece of the uniform is the jersey, which features CAROLINA across the front, a notable detail from the 1980 era. Interestingly, the jerseys featuring the Carolina wordmark were only worn during a preseason photoshoot that season and never actually appeared in a game.
The helmets provide another major connection to the past, featuring the iconic UNC stairstep logo that was worn by some of the program’s biggest stars during the 1980 season.
The result is a throwback that feels authentically Carolina while giving fans a chance to see some of the program’s most recognizable historical elements brought back to life.
North Carolina has not yet announced which game will feature the alternate uniform, leaving Tar Heel fans waiting to see when the 1980-inspired look will officially hit the field.
With Kenan Stadium celebrating 100 seasons, bringing back the visual identity of the 1980 ACC Championship team makes for a fitting way to connect Carolina football’s past with its present.
