Tampa Bay Rays Bring Back Road Grays With Modern Devil Rays Twist
The Tampa Bay Rays are bringing back a familiar look with a distinctly Tampa Bay identity.
The Rays unveiled new road uniforms Monday that reintroduce gray jerseys while putting “Tampa Bay” across the chest for the first time on a primary road uniform since 2007. The new look will debut Tuesday night against the New York Yankees and become the club’s primary road uniform moving forward.
For a franchise that has continued to evolve its visual identity over the years, the new uniforms strike a balance between nostalgia and modernization.
The Rays haven't worn gray jerseys as part of their primary uniform rotation since 2022. The new design replaces the Columbia blue road jerseys featuring the team's burst logo and brings a more traditional baseball look back to Tampa Bay's road wardrobe.
But this isn't simply a return to an old uniform. The gray jersey is built around a modern interpretation of the 1998-2000 Devil Rays uniforms, incorporating elements of the franchise's original visual identity while updating them for the current Rays brand.
The biggest change is right across the chest. Tampa Bay returns to the front of the primary road jersey for the first time since 2007, giving the uniform a stronger connection to the region the franchise represents. The decision comes as the Rays emphasize their long-term commitment to the Tampa Bay area. The team's new ownership group has made that connection a priority as the organization moves toward a future ballpark in Tampa.
One of the most interesting details is the gradient treatment across the front of the jersey. The gradient is inspired by the original Devil Rays color scheme, which was brought back into the franchise's permanent style guide in 2023 as part of the organization's 25th anniversary celebration.
The Rays also refined the placement of the ray underneath “Tampa Bay,” moving it closer to the lettering for a cleaner and more cohesive presentation.
The cap and helmet receive an update as well, drawing from the original 1998 designs while replacing much of the original black with the navy blue that defines the modern Rays identity.
That's what makes the new road uniform work. It doesn't attempt to completely recreate the past. Instead, the Rays are pulling recognizable elements from their early years and reworking them through the lens of the current brand.
The gray base, Devil Rays-inspired gradient, updated ray mark and classic Tampa Bay lettering give the uniform a strong connection to the franchise's history while creating something that feels appropriate for the team's next chapter.
