Utah Adds an Icy Finish to Its Whiteout With Hand-Painted Helmets
Utah’s whiteout just got a little colder. The Utes will debut new hand-painted helmets against Kansas, bringing frosted lettering, painted icicles and snowy mountain scenery to a white shell.
Painted by artist Armando Villarreal, the helmets turn Utah’s whiteout theme into a detailed winter landscape. The design keeps the program’s red identity prominent while introducing artwork that rewards a closer look.
The Utah script is the focal point on the sides. Red lettering is edged with a frosted white treatment, with icicles extending beneath the mark to create the appearance of lettering caught in a freeze. The contrast makes the script stand out against the white shell while connecting it to the helmet’s cold-weather theme.
Along the lower portion of the helmet, snow-covered mountains wrap around the shell. Gray shading defines the ridges and rocky faces, giving the landscape depth within the predominantly white design. The mountain artwork continues around the back, carrying the theme beyond the main side graphics.
The rear interlocking U logo receives its own winter treatment. White speckles across the red mark suggest falling snow, tying a familiar Utah logo into the surrounding artwork. It is another detail that helps the helmet feel consistent from multiple angles.
Villarreal’s hand-painted execution brings these elements together through shading, texture and carefully placed highlights. The frosted script provides the strongest burst of color, while the mountain range adds detail without overwhelming the whiteout look.
The standout is how thoroughly Utah carries the concept across the helmet. The script, icicles, mountains and snow effects all contribute to the same visual story, giving the Utes a distinctive centerpiece for their matchup against Kansas.
Utah’s latest helmet brings a winter-inspired finish to the whiteout, with Villarreal’s artwork turning the white shell into a canvas for the program’s identity and mountain surroundings.
