West Virginia’s Coal Rush uniforms return to the field in 2026, continuing a tribute to the state’s coal mining heritage. First introduced in 2024, the black alternate look honors the miners whose work, bravery and determination helped shape the Mountain State.
The Mountaineers’ 2026 Coal Rush game is set for October 10 against Arizona, with fans encouraged to wear black. The occasion brings the uniform’s story into the stands, creating a shared celebration of West Virginia’s mining community.
The design draws directly from the underground environment. Reflective twill numbers stand out against the black jersey, while a white “West Virginia” wordmark and state outline reinforce the contrast. Those elements reference the reflectors that help miners navigate and work safely underground.
The coal pattern on the jersey’s sleeves and collar originated from a photograph of a sheared wall inside a West Virginia mine. Designers transformed that image into a graphic, bringing an actual piece of the mining landscape into the uniform. Reflective sleeve stripes echo miners’ safety apparel, while the cuff pattern takes inspiration from the cutting blade of a mine shearer.
That detailing continues onto the black pants, which feature reflective side stripes and the same coal-wall pattern. A white state outline on the upper right leg adds another connection to the place and people behind the design.
The helmet completes the tribute with a matte black finish and metallic gray flecks that resemble the shimmer of freshly cut coal. Its design also references the “Black Hat,” a term for an experienced miner. A state outline appears on the shell, while the center stripe combines the coal pattern with a white-to-transparent gradient inspired by the beam of a miner’s headlamp.
The uniform’s development began with firsthand research. With help from retired West Virginia Coal Association President Bill Raney and Gaither Frazier of the Leer Mine in Grafton, athletic department designers Kristin Coldsnow and Phil Lynch spent a day inside the mine. Their observations helped guide the details, working with Nike to translate that experience into the finished uniform.
As Coal Rush returns in 2026, its meaning remains rooted in those connections. From the reflective numbers to the texture of the helmet, the look carries references to the tools, surroundings and safety equipment of West Virginia miners. It gives the Mountaineers a distinctive alternate uniform with a story drawn directly from the state they represent.
