UNISWAG Spotlight: Joe Castro aka Undefined Arts

This UNISWAG Spotlight piece we caught up with Joe Castro aka Undefined Arts who is responsible for some of the dopest custom cleats you see your favorite athletes wearing each week.

• How long have you been customizing cleats for NFL athletes?

This will be my 3rd NFL Season.  I started in October 2017

• Who was the first athlete you did a custom pair for?

Hayes Pullard (NFL Linebacker) was the first Athlete I worked with.

• What first got you into customizing cleats?

I was watching the first My Cause My Cleats initiative on the NFL network while painting a tailgate table.  As a joke I turned to my wife and said “get me an airbrush I can do that”.  She bought me a starter airbrush in February and said “prove it”.  I painted 2 pairs of shoes to try it out in the summer and then painted a pair for myself before a USC football game in October.   I posted them on my personal Instagram and tagged all the past and present Trojans I could in my post and Hayes reached out to me and it just took off from there.

• You are currently working with DeSean Jackson on his cleats each week. How did you guys come up with honoring Nipsey Hussle each week?

After the passing of Nipsey, Paul Richardson messaged me that Monday me said I need 2 pairs with Nipsey Portraits ASAP.  I painted up 2 pairs and shipped them out to him, he posted them on his Instagram account and Desean saw them and got my number through Paul.  Desean had already posted a pair painted by another artist because Nipsey and Desean are from the same city and were good friends.  He sent me quite a few pairs asking me to do some Nipsey stuff for him as well. He gave me insight on his plans during the preseason.

• What is the creative process with you and DeSean? Does he come with a vision or leave it up to you?

It’s a good collaborative vibe with DeSean, if he wants anything specific, he shoots me his ideas. If I have an idea I shoot it over to him to see if he’s feeling the idea.

• What is your typical timeframe to create a custom pair of cleats?

I can do a pair anywhere from 2 hours to 20 hours based on the details in the concept.

• Who are some of the other top athletes you have had the opportunity to work with so far?

Paul Richardson, Desmond King, Melvin Ingram, Robert Woods, Melvin Gordon, Darqueze Dennard, Rayshawn Jenkins, Willie Snead, Jamison Crowder and many more. It’s hard to name everyone cause they’re all big in helping me out with expanding the creativity.

• Which athlete/s has pushed you the most creatively?

Paul Richardson and Hayes Pullard

• What has been the most challenging project you have worked on and why?

Any of the shoe recreations. I’ve done Air max 1 Air Max 97s, Air Max 95s, Air Max Plus Sunsets.  Chucks, YEEZY Zebra, Vans old skool and SK8 hi, and even a Nike Cortez.

Screen Shot 2019-09-18 at 7.11.22 PM.png

• Which pair is your favorite pair of cleats you have created thus far?

The first Pair of NIpsey cleats I painted for Paul and I painted these Marge Simpson cleats last season for Rayshawn Jenkins last year

IMG_1058.JPG

• What brand or style of cleats are your favorite to customize on?

Nike Untouchable Pro usually the CF models that have the flush swoosh, but the Nike Vapor Speed 3 and Untouchable 3 are growing on me.

• Any insight you can share on some upcoming projects you have?

Have quite a few that are pretty cool concepts that I got to keep under wraps for now.

• What is the best way for athletes to get a hold of you if they want to start working with you?

DM via Instagram or email at undefined_arts@outlook.com

Check out some more of Joe Castro aka Undefined Arts custom work he has created and be sure to follow him to see what he makes each week this football season.

LEBRON XVII Kicks

LeBron and Nike have officially released our first look at the new LEBRON XVII kicks. The kicks feature the highest level of performance upgrades for The King. The new shoes feature the Highest-Volume Heel Max Air Unit in a LeBron Shoe to help absorb the shock of his explosive play. The LEBRON XVII combines lightweight Flyknit construction with heat-molded yarns that adds structure and color, which results in a durable, supportive and resists stretching material.

From a visual side the LEBRON XVII shifts his lion crest and the silhouette of him dunking from the heel onto the tongue, combining phrases and symbols like “I’m King,” “LJ” and “23.”

“We had ‘the blueprint’ in mind for the 17, and we started from the ground up on everything, whether that was the construction of the knit or the way we could protect him underfoot with Air bags. The silhouette was a way to reset the mark for LeBron, and futuristically explore how we could help his game with the best that Nike offers.”- Nike's Jason Petrie, designer of the LEBRON XVII

The LEBRON XVII will release September 27th.

New Uniforms for the Golden State Warriors

As the Warriors get set to start their inaugural campaign at Chase Center, the team has revealed a total of six new uniforms for the upcoming season. Four of the six new looks will feature the team’s new logos and custom font, as part of their re-brand earlier this off-season.

Association Edition: A staple in the Warriors uniform arsenal, the white jersey with the team’s Global Logo is a simple, globally-recognized jersey that was first introduced prior to the 2010-11 season. The 2019-20 version of the Association Edition jersey features the team’s refreshed Global Logo, highlighted by an updated, more accurate portrayal of the eastern span of the Bay Bridge.

Icon Edition: A blue alternative to the Association Edition, the Warriors’ Icon Edition jersey features the Warriors’ blue with the team’s yellow Global Logo on the chest.

The Bay – Statement Edition: The Statement Edition uniform features the team’s new The Bay logo, which portrays a landscape of seaside cliffs overlooking water accompanied by an overhead fog, a scene reminiscent of the Golden Gate prior to the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge. The Warriors have played full seasons in each of The Bay’s three major cities: Oakland, San Francisco and San Jose.

The Town – City Edition: A tribute to Oakland first introduced during the 2017-18 season, The Town uniform features the logo for the city of Oakland in white set on a black jersey. The uniform celebrates the Oakland community and its support for the Warriors, who played 47 of the previous 48 seasons in The Town.

San Francisco – Classic Edition: A throwback to the Warriors’ original Bay Area jersey worn upon the team’s arrival to San frFranciscoom Philadelphia in 1962, the San Francisco Classic Edition jersey features the city’s namesake across the chest of the white jersey in a color palate of navy, gold and red. A yellow version of the uniform was worn by the Warriors as a throwback during the 2009-10 season.

The City – Classic Edition: Designed by the team’s larger-than-life owner Franklin Mieuli in 1966-67, The City Classic Edition includes a pair of iconic San Francisco symbols, featuring the Golden Gate Bridge on the front and a cable car on the back of the yellow jersey. The Warriors have worn the throwback several times since the team’s last season in San Francisco in 1970-71, most recently donning the yellow jersey during the 2015-16 campaign.
